Freedom of Information Requests

Any individual, regardless of nationality, citizenship or criminal record, may request information from the departments and agencies covered by the community’s Freedom of Information Act. Requests made here satisfy the act’s formatting requirements automatically: your name, the recipient agency, the submission date and the statutory statement are recorded with your request.

What to expect

  1. A receipt within 3 days confirming your request was properly submitted, or explaining how to correct it.
  2. A decision within 14 days: the information (or where to find it), a denial citing a statutory exemption, or a late notice extending processing to at most 30 days from submission, with reasons.
  3. If denied, you may appeal to the agency from this page. If the appeal is denied, the act provides for a civil suit in the United States District Court.

Information exemptions

Requests may be redacted or denied only where the information falls under a statutory exemption, and reasonable redaction must be attempted before an outright denial:

  • (i) Information made confidential by a legal order or legal agreement
  • (ii) Information that may jeopardise the secrecy of an investigation or law enforcement operation
  • (iii) Information that jeopardises national security and/or defence
  • (iv) Information involved in a sealed court or other legal proceeding
  • (v) Information that may disclose the identity of confidential sources and informants
  • (vi) Information disclosing sensitive emergency protocols
  • (vii) Information disclosing sensitive protection, patrol, investigation, law enforcement, prosecution and/or interrogation techniques
  • (viii) Information that would deprive someone of their constitutional rights, including the right to a fair trial
